Greek food is known around the world. Say Souvlaki and we all think Greece.
As Italians have their Pizza and the Mexicans, their Taco.the Greeks have
their Souvlaki and Moussaka. Greek food is tasty, there is no doubt about
that.
Greek food is actually more than the famous Moussaka and Souvlaki. If
you traveling around in Greece, you will soon find out that each region
have their own specialties. Even here in Crete you will find remarkable
differences around the Island.
Cretan diet is known as one of the most healthiest in the world. The old
traditional way of cooking and old recipes are still in use today. The
keyword for the Cretan food, is the use of fresh ingredients, healthy
vegetables and olive oil.
After many years on the island, we have visited hundreds of taverns and
not all with the best experience. One conclusions is clear " Where
you find Greek people dining, you will find good food.
Fanari Taverna, a famous taverna situated on the upper side of
the port of Rethymno ( The sea road, front side of the castle Fortezza).
Fanari is a very popular taverna among the Greek people but also now lately
discovered by the tourists. Fanari offers a friendly atmosphere with tables
in the seafront. The taverna is famous for specialties like Mezé
(a variable specter of Cretan food after your or the waiters suggestion.
Sissy Taverna, another famous taverna, maybe not so well known
by the tourist becaurse of its location. Sissy is situated a few kilometers
ouside of Rethymno (on the way to Platanes). Also at Sissy you will find
a wide range of the Cretan food.
Vassillis Taverna, down in the old harbor you will find
one of Rethymno`s most popular taverna. Vassillis tavern a classic Greek
restaurant with spirit and soul. For over 20 years Vassillis and his crew
has served them all "tourist from all over the world, famous politicians
and american movie stars. From the menu you can choose between famous
dishes with seafood and meat.
Erokritos, is another popular place for dining. The restaurant
is situated in the heart of the old town of Rethymno. Erokritos offers
a romantic atmosphere with best of the Cretan food.
Pagliaccio, On the beach road you will find another popular
taverna. Pagliaccio was discovered by the tourists long time ago, but
you will also find a large number of locals her. The restaurant is very
popular for dishes like pasta and pizza.
